Gardens

Spectacle and spectacular, admire the town’s historic homes and gardens as you wander Akaroa’s streets.

The Garden at French Farm (Private)

The Garden at French Farm sits on the banks of the lovely Te Waimangu Stream in the French Farm Valley on Banks Peninsula. It contains dramatic herbaceous borders forming a natural colourful amphitheatre above the stream featuring tulips, irises, daylilies and dahlias depending on the season. The intention of the planting is to tie the ornamental garden into the wider landscape with its magnificent backdrop of native bush and surrounding hills. Open most days and when the sign is out. Welcome to come and visit.

The Garden at French Farm (Private)

A feature of the garden is a large 300 year old Pokaka (listed as a Notable Tree of New Zealand) which stands within one of two areas of bush in the garden that are protected by QE11 Covenants. Paths meander through the garden and there are several streamside bush walks with many glades and dells that provide perfect spaces to relax and enjoy the birdsong.

Akaroa Heritage Park

'Put your roots down in Akaroa, plant a tree!.' The Akaroa Heritage Park is accessible from Long Bay Road or on foot via Woodill's Track. Since it was established in 1992, over 1000 native trees have been planted by individual tree enthusiasts. For more information about Heritage Park contact Virginia Wigram on 03 304 8556 or Jeremy Buchanan on 03 304 8445.

These plantings are on-going by locals and visitors, the latest by students from the Akaroa Area School. There are also sections set aside for European and Australian trees.

For a fee you may plant a tree to commemorate a significant event or just your joy of being up in "The Park with a View". If you wish to plant a tree, do ring Jeremy Buchanan on 03 304 8445 or Virginia Wigram 03 304 8556.
