Raquel Smith Profile
Raquel became interested in photography while studying education at Massey University. As a student majoring in art, black and white photography was part of the course content. Raquel became obsessed with darkroom processes. She began with David Hamilton styled images in her first year and by her fourth year of study had explored many styles of nude photography. A series of images were selected and exhibited at The Manawatu Art Gallery in 1990.
While travelling overseas Raquel carried two SLR cameras, which enabled her to capture images in black and white and colour. She completed a Certificate in Photojournalism while living in London.
Since then she has entered the age of digital photography and explored a range of photographic subjects. She has contributed images to three cookbooks, photographed weddings, and captured many aspects of Banks Peninsula. Portraiture continues to be a passion. Raquel collaborates with body painter Stacey Smith and the pair has an impressive collection of body painted images.
Raquel enjoys exploring different photographic processes. She is currently combining screen printing and fabric painting with old photographic images. She is excited about returning to black and white techniques in the newly established ‘ATA Creative’ darkroom. Raquel also teaches Art, Photography, Performing Arts and Maori at Akaroa Area School. She has three children and lives in Akaroa.
