The Akaroa & the Bays entry in the Flower Bed competition at the 2010 Ellerslie Flower Show won the gold award for the second time.
Last year the flower bed featured a yacht, this year it featured the Akaroa lighthouse and a mirror surface dolphin.
The entry beat the entries from Christchurch City council and Ashburton District, which won silver extinction awards.
The Akaroa entry was designed by Jodie Nicholls.
Lead Judge Penny Cliffin said there were three excellent entries in this year's event - Akaroa, Ashburton and Christchurch.
"Akaroa won Gold and the title because the exhibit was skilful and restrained in its plant selection, had a real sense of fun and for being iconic. The garden also stood up to scrutiny at a distance and close up."
'This visually bold display celebrates a well known Peninsula landmark-the Akaroa lighthouse. In this simple scene the elegant lines of this grand structure provide a majestic back drop for swimmers and wildlife alike. See the red, white and blue planting through out suggesting Akaroa’s French heritage. Stop and enjoy a celebration of fun and frivolity in a beautiful setting that is typical Banks Peninsula.'
