| Nau mai, Haere mai. Join us at the Okains Bay Maori and Colonial Museum for a family day to commemorate 172 years since the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. Highlights include a powhiri (traditional welcome), hangi lunch, children’s races, spot prizes and two magnificent waka on display. View the Museum’s amazing collections and enjoy continuous demonstrations all day including blacksmithing, bread baking in a traditional clay oven, early printing works, horse buggy rides, wood carving, horse shoeing, sheep shearing, saddlery, crafts and more! |

PROGRAMME OF EVENTS
10.00am Official guests in hall for morning tea
10.30am Powhiri for guests on Marae
11.30am Chatham Island Moriori room opening
11.45am Citizenship ceremony
12.45pm Gun room opening 
1.00pm Hangi lunch
2.30pm Children’s Races – tugs of war
3.45pm Maori Waka on Opara Stream – high tide
5.00pm Museum closes
11am – 5pm all day activities and continuous demonstrations

The Waitangi Day commemorations at Okains Bay are the largest and longest standing in the South Island with 2011 being the 35th consecutive commemoration. Special events this year include a citizenship ceremony and the re-opening of the recently restored Little River Gaol. All welcome.
