The Tuatara Peninsula Race is a two-day, 85km multi-sport event that includes running, mountain-biking and kayaking each day. Competitors can enter either as an individual or as part of a three-person team.
In November 2004 the inaugural Tuatara Peninsula Race was held and all who participated were amazed at just what we have on our doorstep here in Christchurch. In the words of one competitor, " I have lived in Canterbury all of my life, 53 years, and driven to Akaroa on many occasions, and never realised what Banks Peninsula was all about until I experienced it in this way. I have traveled the world and there would be very few panoramic views that can equal what we have here."
Banks Peninsula is a very unique environment with its volcanic history and fantastic rock formations. Competitors pass through the remnants of the totara forests that once dominated the area and in some ways still do with their mythical qualities. The views are breathtaking and include the Southern Alps, Canterbury Plains, Lyttelton and Akaroa Harbours, Lakes Forsyth and Ellesmere and the multitude of bays that dominate the Banks Peninsula Landscape.
The Tuatara Peninsula Race is designed to be an achievable challenge and fun for elite athletes as well as novices and is held on the last weekend in November annually. It has the feel of what multi-sport used to be like, fun, food, entertainment, and a friendly family atmosphere that will have you coming back year after year.
